NEET-UG Common Entrance for MBBS Admissions 2012-2013 - Number of Seats, Colleges, Syllabus, Exam Structure and Question Paper Pattern

Good news for aspirants of Medical education in India. Here is an important and much needed initiative by Medical Council of India (MCI). Moved with the directive of the Supreme Court, the MCI has decided to conduct the All India Level Common Entrance Examinations for admission to Medical Under Graduate (NEET-UG), Post Graduate (NEET-PG) and Super Specialty (NEET-SP) courses from the academic year 2012-2013. The NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The MCI has already released NEET Notification 2012-13 along with common core syllabus for NEET-UG Entrance Test and invited response from the public before it goes for finalizing the syllabus for Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects. The MCI is likely to work out similar modalities for NEET - PG and NEET - SS Entrance Examinations also. Following are the details of Number of Seats and Medical Colleges under NEET-UG, exam structure, NEET scheme of examination, syllabus for the entrance test, available seats in various courses, application procedure and also provided info on NEET-PG and NEET-SS exams to be conducted for Medical PG and Super Specialty Admissions respectively:

Number of seats available in MBBS and PG Medical Courses across the country:

1) Seats for Under Graduate (MBBS / BDS) Medical courses: 42,000 (Approximately)
2) Seats for PG medical (MD / MS) courses: 20,600 (Approximately)

Common Core Syllabus: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has formulated common core syllabus for NEET- UG exam and the same has been displayed on the MCI website at http://www.mciindia.org/tools/announcement/CoreSyllabus_NEET-UG.pdf for feedback from the students, their parents and general public. The MCI will finalize the core syllabus for physics, chemistry and biology subjects after taking all the valuable suggestions into consideration. The prescribed Core Syllabus put on the MCI website was prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

NEET - UG Examination Schedule: The NEET- UG examination is scheduled to be held from January-February 2012. The pattern of the entrance examination for NEET -UG, distribution of questions across different subjects and model questions for the entrance exam will be made available on the MCI or other separate website during August 2011. The NEET-SS for admission to super-specialty courses (DM / MCh) is also scheduled to be held from June 2012.

The MCI will issue notification of NEET 2012-2013 soon after the finalization of syllabus and scheme of entrance examination. Presently there are many number of medical entrance exams at state, central and college levels. There are CETs conducted by States, separate test by private colleges and deemed universities. A common entrance test like NEET will bring down stress on the students. Private medical colleges also may consider the scores / ranks of NEET for admissions to their colleges.

Medical Colleges: There are about 314 medical colleges in the country. Out of these 144 colleges are being run by State and Central Governments and the remaining 170 colleges are under private managements. Out of these 170, there are about 50 deemed universities. Total available seats in Government colleges are estimated at 16398 and 19085 in private medical colleges. It is estimated that there are about 31,000 seats on offer for MBBS and also another 11,000 seats available in PG medical courses. The MCI also also made it clear that State Quotas and Reservations in Medical Colleges would remain intact as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will draw up ranks / merit lists at national and state levels separately for General Category, SC, ST and OBC and PD candidates.

Exclusions from NEET - UG: The NEET entrance examination would cover most of the medical colleges in India. The exceptions listed out are AFMC- Armed Forces Medical College, AIIMS- All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER- Chandigarh) as these institutions were set up by separate laws and will be out of the purview of NEET- UG. The MCI has also clarified that the new entrance test will not interfere with the management quota of the private medical and dental colleges.

The NEET - UG has finally come out crossing number of hurdles from various colleges and groups. Let us hope it will meet the aspirations and expectations of the dreamers of medical career. You can express your opinion on NEET - UG Entrance examination and its syllabus through commenting in the form given below.

  1. Unless the divide and rule policy is removed, no good thing can be done. For example, maharashtra is divided into three regions for medical admissions for the reasons best known to them. It has made lot of students to join 12th std in vidarba area.

  2. Will there be gujcet for the year 2012-2013? Can we still apply for colleges in gujarat for the year 2012-2013?

    1. Ya... the NEET will start from the year 2013-14. Until then, state exams like gujcet will be there.

  3. If the state of Tamil Nadu takes legal recourse to stay out of the NEET, at least the CBSE students from Tamil Nadu should be allowed to appear for the NEET. This should be so because 12th standard marks are the only consideration for MBBS selection in Tamil Nadu (which does has not have MBBS entrance exam) and there is a unfair disparity between marks awarded by the Tamil Nadu state board and CBSE.

  5. Now there will be a big rush for entrance exam coaching centres ;it is actually rather late now to enroll in such centres as students are busy preparing for their boards. This NEET should be held for academic year 2013 2014 as students can plan well in advance for preparation for boards as well as entrance coaching.

  6. When the syllabus followed during 11th and 12th std. is not uniform across all the state boards in the country, a core syllabus released by MCI based on CBSE curriculum gives an unfair advantage to CBSE students

  7. it is difficult to the student of 12 std to face the exam in this year because syllabus of this year is not of cbse pattern

  8. since the state board syllabus is different from the neet based on cbse it will be difficult to read

  9. if the neet exam will held in maharashtra all student can't face it because there is no enough time to recover CBSE syallabus in 1 year and also there are no books for preparation of it for 11th and 12th std student he/she wil lost his future as well as dreams . so goverment of maharashtra should aaply the exam from 2014 by releasing syallbus before at least 6 month before starting of 11 th standerd

  12. This is unfair for students who are right now in 12th as in they are getting ready for board exams..if NEET will be their then they will have to start from scratch which is not possible now, will have to go for new coaching classes which are not available at this point..and those who are not in CBSE it will be very difficult for them..protest against this..this nust be implemented from 2013-14..so that students starts preparations in that format..

  13. Will the Neet-ug be applicable from 2011-12 or 2012-13 academic year? It will be unfair for the students of maharashtra if it is implemented in the current academic year. please try to make it very clear .

  14. The idea of bringing NEET-UG exam is really very appreciable , as the total number of seats have become just 20 times. So their would be a big opportunity for the students to get a reputaed medical collage. But, its true , that it would be impossible for the students appearing for 12th in the year 2012. So, its a kind request to medical counsil of india to reschedule the dates for the examination. It should be conducted in the month of April.

  15. this is cruel discigen for maharashtra board students as the syllabus is 50% different than state board. I feel that Maharashtra government also take stay on neet exam as Tamilnadu atleast for this year to prepare study for students

  16. 250 questions in 180 min is difficult .

its a good move to standardise education . The new pattern if implemented in 2013 will give ample time to prepare as the present 11th grade students can study accordingly.

  20. human physiology should not be eliminated becoz at the end of the day its humans a doctor needs to treat further if only 2 chapters are being included in plant physiology then why not include others which are more conceptual if u are saying concepts will be tested and why broadening physics which is least required in medical college

  22. mci after conducting a prestigeous common entrance exam national wide for mbbs, allows to continue all reservaions and quotas .the whole meaning of improving the quality of medical education is lost.rule must be a rule and seat should be through open merit,or else the present state board entrance exams are good enough.seat should be through open merit. this exam is meaning less for the merit students who always compete openely

  23. the new syllabus is not according to the biology students as the main part of biology i.e. the human physiology is not included in the new syllabus.the chapters which do not have any relation with the students future in becoming a doctor must be eliminated from the syllabus for eg-plant morphology ,hydrodynamics etc have no use to a person becoming a physician.

  27. this is a good fortune for medical aspirants but IT WILL BE A DIFFICULT TASK FOR STATE BOARD STUDENTS to cope up with the CBSE portions. as there is no enough time to cover the extra syllabus other than state this is gonna be a great problem for state students . so considering we state students PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE SYLLABUS.
    OR
PLEASE CONTINUE THE STATE EXAMS AS USUAL THAT IS GOING ON TILL DATE AND THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A CONTROL OVER THE RAISING MANAGEMENT QUOTA AMOUNT

  44. THis to know about the possibility of NEET to avoid other tests. atleast the test from the same state[karnataka] like Comed . K. If the comed .K announcement meant for only engineering then it is good. Like to get clarification on this regard. Other wise it is clashing with the date of AFMC. The date is taken by AFMC as a constant date for the years long. So with the hope can we apply for the AFMC without missing one chance of another exam. And wishing for the cOmmom NEET exam with understanding that no need to write other examms for MBBS other than AIIMS, AFMC.JIPMER and CMC , please give me a clear clarification on this .. my email addr- tinyshaji@hotmail.com
