Hyderabad University- Linguistics and Translation Studies Entrance Exams

University of Hyderabad (HCU) a specialized Center for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS) to teach and pursue research in the discipline of Linguistics and Translation. The center emphasizes on Language Technology, Translation Studies, Language typology, Lexicography, Language Teaching and Psycholinguistics. CALTS has advanced computational facil;ities and research training in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Translation (MT). Other specialized areas of the Center are formal Syntax and Semantics, Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics, Historical Linguistics, Modern Indian and Foreign Languages such as Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bangla, Sanskrit, Oriya, Khasi and Russian. The CALTS offer two M.A. Programs (2 years M.A. and 5-year Integrated M.A.), two M.Phil. programs (Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies) and two Ph.D. programs (Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies). Following are details of programmes, eligibility, entrance exam structure, availability of previous question papers and application procedure:

1) M.A. in Applied Linguistics / Translation Studies: Duration is two years. Entrance examination paper consists of objective type questions for 100 marks. There will be three sections. Section – A will have 30 questions covering language proficiency in English. Section – B will have questions from general knowledge related to world languages for 20 marks. Section – C will contain 50 questions from language data for analysis.

2) 5-year Integrated M.A. in Language Sciences: Duration of the programme is 10 semesters. The course is conducted by Center for Integrated Studies in co-ordination with CALTS.

3) M.Phil. in Applied Linguistics / Translation Studies: This two year programme will have course work and dissertation. Entrance Examination paper will consist of objective type multiple choice questions for 75 marks. There will be 75 questions covering topics such as General linguistics, Applied linguistics and Core linguistics. For Translation Studies, questions will be asked from the areas of General Aptitude for Language, literature and Translation, Comprehension and analytical ability in Translation.

4) The Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics / Translation Studies: Minimum duration of Ph>D programme is two years. Entrance Examination for Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics will have 75 multiple choice questions for 75 marks. Questions will be from Core linguistics, Applied linguistics and Research Methodology. Question paper for Ph.D. in Translation Studies also will be for 75 marks. A total of 75 questions will be drawn from the areas of theories of Translation, practical translation and comprehension and analytical ability with respect to translation. Those qualified in writtentest will have to appear for an interview for 25 marks. Candidates applying for Ph.D. should submit a a brief description of their proposed topic of research along with details of earlier research work.
