Hudhud was a strong tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage to
the city of Visakhapatnam and the neighbouring districts of
Vizianagaram and Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh on 12 October 2014
(Sunday). Damages are estimated to be at least 70000 crore (US$11
billion), with assessments still underway. It tore through the Steel
City, unleashing widespread destruction and bringing the otherwise
bustling city of nearly 20 lakh people to a grinding halt. The damage
caused by Hudhud not only changed the landscape of the Port City, but
also made it the first city in the country to be directly hit by a
cyclone since 1891 as per the records of the IMD. Under the impact of
Hudhud that made a landfall on Sunday, accompanied by gusty winds and
heavy rains, the City of Destiny looked like a war-ravaged zone with
lakhs of uprooted trees, knocked down cell towers, transformers, and
telephone poles lying strewn at several places. Essential services
were disrupted and people remained indoors to escape nature's fury.
However, before Hudhud approached the shores, the government
machineries at the centre and the state had pooled their resources
together to warn people, arrange evacuation, and deploy rapid action
teams. As a result of such preemptive measures, number of deaths
remained at less than 50. Fortunately, the cyclone hit on Sunday. Had
it been on a working day, there would
have been more number of deaths.
