Intermediate Practical Exams Tips for Chemistry Subject
Systematic approach, good planning, conducting 3 hour self mock test
as per board exam, proper digestion of new changes in exam can help a
student to score 30 out of 30 marks.
Before the Exam: Write all the 1st year & 2nd year experiments in a
single record book. Write 1 project (out of 16 projects) separately in
stick file in standard format as given in the Telugu Akademi Manual
and get them certified.
Know the weightage of marks and refer "question bank for intermediate
practical examination in Chemistry" to know the model questions and
scheme of valuation.
If you are thorough with the systematic qualitative analysis, you
could able to write all the points related to all the 24 simple salts.
Do not mug analysis of 24 salts.
Conduct a self practical mock test for 3 hours and verify it with your
lecturer and correct the mistakes. Note & remember the colour,
appearance of all the 24 salts one day prior to your exam. Attend the
practical exam 1 hour in advance.
Allot 1 hour for salt analysis. Write the procedure in 3 columns
(experiment, observation, inference). Write only required points
learned in model analysis and write as per the marks distribution for
each and every reaction as mentioned in the question bank.
Viva: Viva questions are quite related to your practical exam only.
Though viva is meant for 2 marks, it will fetch you a lot, if you do
not bluff, do not give unrelated, unpleasant answers. Viva questions
will test the depthness of your knowledge.
Viva questions are related to chromatography, Lyophilic & Lyophobic
colloids, formula
& colour of ppt., tests (preliminary & confirmatory) for functional
group / Cation / Anion, diazotisation, carbyl amine test, libermann
test, Mollisch's test, Benedict's test, Biuret, Ninhydrin,
Xanthoproteic tests, distinguish between aldehydes and ketones,
alcohol and phenol, indicator, end point, pH, standard solution,
emulsion, dialysis, etc.
Precautions:
Use only one drop of indicator to locate clear, exact end point. The
difference between 1st and 2nd titre values must be within 0.1 - 0.2
ml. But 2nd and 3rd values must be same (but lesser than 0.1 ml or 0.2
ml than that of 1st value.)
Rinse conical flask only with distilled water. Wash and rinse pipette
and burette with the solution to be taken. Fill the pipette or burette
without air gaps or bubbles. Note down the readings with naked eye
without any error.
Finish all the calculations carefully. Don't forget to write the
units. Do not do titration of KMnO4 with oxalic acid very fast. Add 1
test tube full of dil. H2SO4 to oxalic acid before titration and
heating. Use freshly prepared solutions, reagents. Do not use
contaminated salts, reagents to get correct test or result. Use
distilled water for all tests. Wear cotton dress, glasses. Handle
bunsen burner flame and chemicals, concentrated
acids carefully.
