Hyderabad University - Telugu Entrance Exams and Courses

Department of Telugu at University of Hyderabad (HCU) if offering M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in Telugu Language and Literature. The University conducts separate entrance examinations for admission to all these courses. The department of Telugu emphasises on research along with teaching. An department also gives importance to Classical literature and Sanskrit along with interdisciplinary approach. Famous faculty of the department include Professors, N.S. Raju, S. Sarat Jyotsna Rani, B. Ramabrahamam, G. Aruna Kumari, R.V. Rama Krishna Sastry, Pillalamarri Ramulu, Darla Venkateswara Rao, D. Vijayalakshmi etc.

1) M.A. programme in Telugu: This is a two year or four semester course. There are 12 course and 15 optional courses offered in this programme. The programme offer wide range of specializations such as classical, modern and folk literatures, traditional grammar, Telugu linguistics, literary criticism and aesthetics, computer application to Telugu language and mass media. The Entrance Examination for M.A. consists of objective type questions for 100 marks. Questions will be asked from the areas of classical and modern literary works, quotations, grammar, alankaras, General Knowledge, genres, authors, chandas, Andhra Culture, history of literature, literary movements and history of Telugu language, current events etc. There is no negative mark for wrong answer.

2) M.Phil. in Telugu: Duration of this course is Two semesters or one year. The programme includes course work and dissertation. Admission will be based on written test and interview. M.Phil Entrance Exam Paper will consist of objective type questions for 75 marks from the areas of classical and modern literature, linguistics and history of Telugu Language and Literature grammar, chandas, literary criticism, alankaras, Dramaturgy, aesthetics, literary works, authors, General Knowledge, folk literature, Basic Sanskrit knowledge, etc. No negative marks for wrong answeres. Those qualified in written test will be called for interview / oral test. this will carry 25 marks.

3) Ph.D. programme in Telugu: This is completely a full fledged research programme which involves studies in classical and modern Telugu literature, history, literary movements and Language studies and comparative literature and culture. Candidates have to submit a thesis under the supervision of a research guide of the concerned specialization. Ph.D. Entrance examination consists of towo parts. Part-A of the Ph.D. entrance test will consist of objective type questions and there will be no negative marks for these questions. This part will be for 25 marks. Part-B will deal with problems related to particular area of research for a total of 75 marks. Questions will be from the following areas:

1) Classical literature, modern literature, literary criticism, grammar, language and folk literature: 20 marks
2) Preparation of research design, detailed synopsis of a given research topic : 15 marks
3) Literary appreciation or linguistic analysis: 15 marks
4) Oral test / Interview 25 marks.

Model papers of the entrance examinations are available with the University library. Admission notification of the University of Hyderabad will be usually released in March - April every year. Results and admission process will be completed in May and Class work for the new academic year will commence from June every year.
