10th English Preparation Tips for Students - New Syllabus

Dear Student, As you all know, your English textbook is student-friendly and interactive in nature. The new teaching methods and the activities given in the textbook demand your active participation.

The questions the teacher asks at various stages of learning may have more than one answer; you are expected to express your divergent ideas and thoughts.

What you have to do...

- You learn most of the things through interactions, discussions and sharing; better learning takes place when you participate in these actively.

- Try to understand the main ideas by guessing the meaning of words and sentences. You may use the glossary given at the end of the text or a dictionary.

- Try to identify the various features of the text type (such as story, essay, poem, etc.) you are reading.

- While working in groups, take turns to share what you could understand, what you could not understand, which parts you liked the most and the features of the text that you identified.

- Think critically from multiple points of view to answer the questions the teacher asks you.

- Your teacher shall give you a possible writing task (conversation, description, narrative, etc.) after reading a part of the text. Understand the task clearly, then attempt it individually and present it before the group /class.

- After getting further inputs/feedback from your teacher, work in groups to improve your writing. Share your ideas with your group to refine your work further.

- Don’t ignore the project and study skills. Undertake them as directed in the textbook.
- The examination is not based on the content of the textbook. Instead, you will have to produce your own language as demanded by the context.

- At the end of each unit there is a page meant for self assessment. You have to read the statements and respond to them.

- Don’t depend on the guides and question banks that may be available in the market as they will not be of any use to you for your examination.

- You can improve your language by interacting with your friends and teachers in English and by reading stories, news papers, etc. and by listening to and watching, English programmes on TV.

- While sharing ideas at individual level or in groups: If you are not able to express your ideas in English, you can share in your mother tongue. Later, collectively decide how to say it in English.
